Flower School Is Cool
I took a floral arranging class at Fiori in downtown Seattle to study the concept of pave floral design, where the blooms are arranged closely together forming a domed shape. I learned that when done correctly, the arrangement should look like there's no beginning and no end; there's no front or back; the entire arrangement looks complete and beautiful from any angle you approach it. (Pictured is a photo from the Fiori website, an arrangement from the Valentine's class). At the end of class, students take home their floral projects, along with a goody bag containing tools for future arrangements.

From the desk of Saponika's Principal Chemist - Christine Lam
The boss lady/building manager (who is super cool by the way), stopped me and was like "I saw this Chris Rock movie...something about sodium hydroxide...being bad for you...makes your scalp crazy and it exists in soap"?
First of of all Eleanor, relax. I know you saw Good Hair, so did I, and it was a great movie, no? Yes! Let's have a drink after I'm done with work. No? Ok.
Second - Sodium Hydroxide (aka lye)is crazy dangerous on its own, so DO Not farkle with it unless you know exactly what you are doing. In the case of soapmaking, a sodium hydroxide/H2o solution is combined with fats + oils at a specific temperature. The molecules do a song and dance similar to the snowball event at old Skate King...before long, saponification occurs, the initial dangerous properties of sodium hydroxide become neutralized, so there's nuthin to worry about because voila, tah-dow...you now have soap. (insert the sound of a record scratch). I walk away with the bravado of a bad ass breakdancer...and then I trip.

Lady Lam Renton Highlands - Overflow Parking
Sometimes parking at the Creative Workspace can be tight, that's why management rented extra parking stalls from the adjacent kind neighbors at the Cedar Park Apartments. To find the overflow parking, Turn RIGHT onto the main street (4th) and once you pass the Self Storage, take a RIGHT into the apartment parking lot and park in any stall labeled "CWS."

Q&A with Lady Lam: Booking Appointments
Q: Hey Christine, how far in advance should I plan for lash extensions at Lady Lam before going on vacation?
A: Ladies with freshly applied lashes should allow 24 hours before getting their pretty eyes wet in order for the glue to cure properly. Therefore, it's optimal to book your lash appointment about a day or two in advance of your trip.

Q&A with Lady Lam: Phone/Text/Email
Q: What's the best way to contact Christine at Lady Lam with questions or to book?
A: Phone, Text or Email are all acceptable ways to reach me. If it's your first time booking, I would really appreciate a phone call, but I realize discretion is necessary if you're at work (especially if you're trying to score a Brazilian wax), in which case text or email is fine too. Tell me your name, how you found Lady Lam, identify what service you want (Lashes? Waxing? Facial? Car Wash?) and I will try my best to reply as soon as possible.

The Tin Room
Thank you, Dan the Sausage Man from The Tin Room in Burien for being so accomodating. It was crowded but you still found us a cozy lil place to sit when you could've just ignored us. Waiting for our table with a couple of delicious whiskey sours made standing around look less dumb. Dan, your the man! Please say hello to your mother for me.

Q&A with Lady Lam: Eyelash Extensions
Q: How many lashes per eye do you apply?
A: I allot up to 2 hours for the initial visit. This timing includes consultation, paper work and the actual application process which is meticulous. I don't count the number of lashes that I apply, but I work efficiently to apply as many extensions as possible onto viable natural eyelashes to yield a most luxurious, voluminous finish.

Delsey Helium Hyperlite 22" Carry On
I'm finally chucking my Goodwill suitcase for something a bit more refined. This Delsey carry-on is under 8 lbs, so I should be able to lift this into the overhead bin without falling over.

Organizing
This shelving unit by Whitmor was reasonably priced and incredibly easy to assemble. It only took me about three months (hence my absence from this blog) though for a normal person, assembly should only take 30 minutes. No tools required.
